What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda means “the science of life” in Sanskrit. It is a medical science from India that began more than 5,000 years ago. It is the art of healthy living using diet, lifestyle and herbal tools to achieve balance between our internal and external environments, according to our individual birth constitution. One of the most important components for achieving health per Ayurveda, is to promote and achieve good digestion and to eat and live according to the season. Our bodies and external environments are dynamic, Ayurveda provides wisdom in how to adapt with the seasons of life for true health and happiness. Yoga and Ayurveda are known as sister sciences.
Ayurveda is most powerful as disease prevention. Our bodies give us information and feedback in the form of symptoms. Ayurveda recommends paying attention to symptoms early, attempt to identify the root cause and to make adjustments as needed to return to balance.
Ayurveda looks at the person as a whole, not a disease or symptom. Ayurveda teaches that our mental state, thought processes and stress levels impact our bodies deeply. Ayurveda uses yoga asana, pranayama (breathing practices), meditation, mindfulness, self massage, marma therapy (pressure point massage), fresh seasonal food, proper sleep, schedule and routine to assist the body in achieving a balanced mind, body and spirit.
My background in nutrition and Ayurveda blend well, as Ayurveda recognizes proper digestion and elimination to be at the root of health. I have found Ayurveda provides the wisdom that nutrition science in our country is lacking. Ayurveda nutrition is individualized and encourages self awareness and recognizing yourself as the expert, rather than looking for external answers from “experts” based on the current trend or fad. Ayurveda is empowering and life changing when made part of a person’s daily life.
